Kilimanjaro Climb

Jim in TrainingDear Friends,

As you may know, for the last six years I have been involved with the work of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) with the aim of improving the working conditions of trekking porters worldwide.

In mid January 2004, I will be climbing (or crawling up!) Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the African continent at 5895 meters. I am looking for sponsors to raise money for IPPG to finance the fitting out and running of the much needed porter shelter and rescue post at Machermo (4480 meters), in the Everest National Park (this is in collaboration with CAN – Community Action Nepal – who are building the structure).

If you wish to support this effort, you can sponsor me! For as much or as little as you wish. Decide on the amount of money you want to give per meter I manage to climb! There is a total of 5895 meters in the total climb. So if, for example, you sponsor me for 1p (or 1cent) per meter, if I reach the top your donation would be £58.95 (or $58.95). If I only get up part way, you pay less.

All the money raised will go directly to the Machermo project, every cent/penny/rupee of it. In return you will receive a photographic account of the ascent!

Please email your pledge of sponsorship back to, so I can chase you to pay once I am back from the climb. Any currency accepted: pounds, dollars, euros, rupees, pesos, whatever.

Meantime, all the best for 2004,

Dr Jim Duff, Director

Plastic bag to keep dryLooking into the crystal ball, it would seem that the way of the future for tourism operators is combining adventure holidays with practical and well thought out aid to the communities visited.

It is IPPG’s wish to promote an ethical and sustainable trekking industry to benefit all concerned. Please help to achieve this end by encouraging people to go trekking and to care for their porters.
