Last September, IPPG held a photo-exhibition at the Yak & Yeti hotel in Kathmandu. It opened on 30th September and ran till October 5th.
Celebrating the Mountain Porter featured work by fifteen photographers from seven different countries depicting traditional porters, trekking porters, high altitude porters, and women, children and elderly porters. The exhibition was well received and reviews appeared in a number of papers and magazines in Nepal. It has been and will be a great way to raise the profile of the porter issue.
The exhibition is now a permanent body of work and will travel the world in years to come. It will be in Canada at the beginning of this year, then will go to USA, and should be in Austria in June 2001. Suitable high profile venues are sought worldwide.
Many of the exhibition photos are now on the web site (www.ippg.net). Prints are available for sale. Please contact info@ippg.net.
And to those who volunteered their time to make it happen:
Suren, Deepak, Arthur, Ben, Prakash, Nimesh, Jim, Rejane, Lyn, Elsie's granddaughter and friend, and all the other helpers.

Opening talk of the photo exhibition
"Celebrating the Mountain Porter"
Kathmandu 29th September 2000
By Pemba Doma Sherpa, first Sherpa woman to climb Everest from the north side.
"Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to today's photo exhibition Celebrating the Mountain Porter.
Nearly since the dawn of civilisation there have been porters, but recently, man began to improve his methods of carrying. Today, we have trucks and trains doing the work of thousands of porters, but in the world's many remote and mountainous regions, the porter remains.
The load is never light, and the distance seldom small. Although porters provide an invaluable service, sadly and all too often, they are mistreated and forgotten regarding their health and attire.
It is a noble and ancient task that porters carry out every day, and I believe that they should be treated justly. The photographs of this exhibition are just a few portrayals of day-to-day life of a porter. Thank you."
