It is quite simple to be a supporter of IPPG:
Spread the word, step in and complain about perceived injustices, ask your travel or trekking agent about their policy on porter safety and complain loudly if this is not up to standard. Finally, if you go trekking: take care of your porter
About Porters
by Prakash Adhikari, IPPG-Nepal
This is the only industry which have provided a big employment opportunity for the poor unskilled people of Nepal. Portering is not a hobby but it is a challenge and risk born by the people for their survival. Actually I have a bright hope to improve the situation of the porter. That's why I am happy to volunteer my time and labour for the IPPG. I think you all have to play a role to improve the situation for these porters.
Often porters are neglected by the local lodge. The porters cannot stay in the lodge or teahouse. Sometimes he even cannot buy food. It would be very nice if the tea house and lodge owner on the trekking trail would think that the porters are also an important component of the tourism.
The porters themselves cannot think about the possible danger in the Himalaya and they are compelled to do this job even if they know the possible danger. This is a struggle for survival. In this situation there was a strong need of someone to speak about the porter and forward the venture of promotion of porter safety. That is why IPPG was formed to promote porter safety and help minimize the unnecessary deaths of porters that occur in the Himalaya.
