Editorial

Dr Jim Duff, international coordinator. How are the porters of this world faring? The porter issue in Nepal is now well publicized, and Africa is next on the list. We know very little about South American porters so far.
IPPG is increasingly active in many countries of the Western world. Fifteen countries now have representatives raising awareness and publicizing the issue.
In this newsletter, Ben Ayers' article gives an insight into the porter's lot, and the incident reports complete the picture.
The photo exhibition has been to Austria and will be seen in New Zealand next. The BBC porter documentary goes nationwide on SBS in Australian later in the year and will be shown in Norway eventually.
4,000 posters were printed in Kathmandu this year. They are being distributed via trekkers, trekking companies, porters, school groups (thanks to Audobon Nepal Program) along all popular trekking routes in Nepal.
IPPG intends to run a round Dhaulagiri trek in 2002 to build a porter shelter in high and remote Hidden Valley. Anyone interested in taking part, contribute ideas or donation, please contact me.
Hard work by all IPPG's volunteers means that the outlook for porters continues to improve.
IPPG is a grassroots organization whose aim is to help the trekking porter by raising awareness of their vulnerability especially in bad weather, at high altitude and in remote areas. Started in 1997, IPPG focuses on provision of protective clothing, shelter and medical care appropriate to the climate, the area and the altitude where the trekking porter is working.
